Backstory

TIM: "Coming Home" was our first full length, professionally recorded album. By the time we entered the studio, we had written over 50 songs and selected the best 15 for this, our debut album.  An underlying theme of this album is one of self-determination. From the outright declarative tracks like "I'm Coming Home", "Get on Top of the World" and "Standing Next to God" to forward-looking tracks like "One Step Ahead of the Joneses", these are primarily songs of energy and ambition.

Recorded and Engineered by Bob Pucci at Metropolis Studios, Villa Park Illinois from June to September 1994

Produced by The Vinyl Goods

Digital remixed and remastered by Tim Moberly in 2017

The Remastering Story

Having recently un-earthed the original 24-track analog master tapes, the band’s chief engineer Tim Moberly spent over six months painstakingly reconstructing and updating the music. “Using modern digital technology, I was able to improve the dynamics of every single track and greatly reduce unnecessary noise. With virtually unlimited studio time, I was also able to take as long as I wanted to remix the songs in an effort to make them more breathable and make each instrument more distinct. The result is a recording that is bolder, brighter, and more detailed than ever before. I’m now hearing new elements of the recordings that I had not heard before, and I was present for the recording sessions themselves!”

The band also had new artwork created for the re-release through a contest that yielded nearly 100 different album cover designs. From these entries, the band chose a winner, and fans can experience the full set of new artwork on the limited edition CD.

The Songs

1. I'm Coming Home
Authors: Tim Moberly, Pete Pecoraro, Andrew Thies

Backstory

TIM: At the time I was writing this song, I was a 20-something living in an apartment in suburban Chicago. I had been reading a number of motivational books at the time, and one thing I learned from those books is to writing down one's goals is a key strategy for achieving them. So I wrote them down in this song. This song is about about the goals I had in my life at the time; owning a house, being with a woman who loves me, and having a family.

2. Janey (You've Come a Long Way)
Authors: Tim Moberly, Randy Flones, Pete Pecoraro

Backstory
TIM: I've always been fascinated with songwriters who create and share characters with their audiences. In this case, I wrote this song about this character "Janey" partially based on my sister Ginny. I stole the "Janey" name from Bruce Springsteen, as he had a recurring character named Janey appear in his songs over the years. At the time, my sister had finally moved out, established herself on her own, and was visiting her on a regular basis. She had come a long way from those days when we were kids hanging out together all summer. This is a memory of that type of relationship.

3. The Walls of Jericho
Authors: Tim Moberly, Pete Pecoraro

Backstory
TIM: This was a classic collaboration between myself and Pete. I had brought the chorus of this song to one of our songwriting sessions, and Pete helped sketch out the lyrics for rest of the track. The chorus was inspired by the Jericho story from the Bible, but the resulting lyrics in the verses did not reflect the actual Jericho story. Many years later, Randy Flones and I re-worked the lyrics for the band's faith-based release "The Light of Day" when we re-recorded the song.

4. Keeping the Wolves Away
Authors: Tim Moberly, Pete Pecoraro
Download Guitar Chords and Lyrics (PDF)

Backstory
TIM: Pete brought the song title "Keeping the Wolves Away" into one of our songwriting sessions and we developed it into this track. It's about the struggle of working people everywhere and the constant efforts by others (the wolves) to get a piece of the action, whether they deserve it or not.

5. The Show Must Go On
Authors: Tim Moberly, Pete Pecoraro, Randy Flones
Download Guitar Chords and Lyrics (PDF)

Backstory
TIM: This was full-group collaboration as we wrote collectively during a night of rehearsal. Pete had been talking about a recent experience at a comedy club with a "fat guy" on stage telling dirty jokes and we started improvising the music from there on.

6. Get on Top of the World
Authors: Tim Moberly, Pete Pecoraro
Download Guitar Chords and Lyrics (PDF)

Backstory
TIM: As I had been reading a number of motivational books at the time, this song is all about motivation, drive, and a desire to be the best and get the most out of life. A bit reflective on the summer of 1993, I was regretting the time I wasted that summer and set a course to do more.

7. Whatever Happened to Halloween?
Authors: Tim Moberly, Pete Pecoraro
Download Guitar Chords and Lyrics (PDF)

Backstory
TIM: At the time in our lives while we wrote this, we were becoming disillusioned by a number of things including what we perceived as the slow death of one of our favorite childhood holidays, Halloween. It seemed at the time that kids were trick-or-treating less and less. Fueling the sentiment were growing incidents of Halloween candy tampering. It's a nostalgic look back at our experience as kids.

8. One Step Ahead of the Joneses
Authors: Tim Moberly, Pete Pecoraro
Download Guitar Chords and Lyrics (PDF)

Backstory
TIM: Fueled by a similar sentiment as Get on Top of the World, I started writing this as a motivational tribute to the future. I was inspired while visiting a family member who spent much of their time watching reruns of old programs on TV all day. It seems all so pointless to me, and something I wanted to avoid doing in my own life. It's a song about always striving to move forward.

9.Approaching Meltdown
Authors: Pete Pecoraro, Tim Moberly

Download Guitar Chords and Lyrics (PDF)

Backstory
TIM: Pete brought forth this apocalyptic song, partially influenced by his experience and observations as a high school teacher and political events of the time. One of the heaviest tracks on the Coming Home album musically and lyrically.

10.Taking the Long Way Home
Authors: Tim Moberly, Pete Pecoraro
Download Guitar Chords and Lyrics (PDF)

Backstory
TIM: Lyrically, this song is about assessing one's immediate past and how it shapes one's future. Musically, it's one of the simplest songs we ever produced, consisting of the same three chords throughout the entire song. Frank's melodic bass line is what helps keep the whole thing together.

11. Lost Cause
Authors: Tim Moberly, Pete Pecoraro, Randy Flones
Download Guitar Chords and Lyrics (PDF)

Backstory
TIM: This track was written during an improvisational session at a band rehearsal. While the band jammed the backing track, Pete made up the lyrics on the spot and the song was written in about 10 minutes. The studio recording captured on Coming Home was equally quick; recorded and mixed in about 15 minutes. A fun one to play live!

12. Ten Thousand Miles
Authors: Tim Moberly, Pete Pecoraro
Download Guitar Chords and Lyrics (PDF)

Backstory
TIM: This is the only song from our original demo tape to make it onto the Coming Home album, and one of the earliest songs we wrote. The key feature of the track is the electric guitar riff that slides up the neck. The unique guitar sound was the result of using overdrive and flanger pedals in tandem.

13. Standing Next to God
Authors: Tim Moberly, Pete Pecoraro
Download Guitar Chords and Lyrics (PDF)

Backstory
TIM: Another great collaborative effort with Pete. I brought in the chorus and chord progression during one of our songwriting sessions while Pete helped fill in the verses and make the song whole. It's a song of self-determination, a theme that carries throughout the Coming Home album.

14. Before Getting to Galesburg
Authors: Pete Pecoraro, Tim Moberly
Download Guitar Chords and Lyrics (PDF)

Backstory
TIM: One of the best songs Pete ever wrote, from the jangling guitar rhythm to the pining lyrics. This was the first track we finished in the studio, and can still picture all of us sitting the control room suddenly realizing, "so that's what we sound like". It was the first time we captured the "Vinyl Goods" sound.

15. The President is Dead
Authors: Tim Moberly, Pete Pecoraro, Randy Flones
Download Guitar Chords and Lyrics (PDF)

Backstory

TIM: Largely influenced by the 1992 presidential race, this acerbic take on the political scene of the times ironically seems timeless in its relevancy. Pete took a lot of pride in compiling all the various quotes and recordings, which were critical in bringing the song to life.
